A total of $375,000 in federal funding is being sent to the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences to train 75 community health workers through mid-2027, university officials announced Wednesday.

UAMS' Institute for Community Health Innovation received the grant through the Office of Skills Development, contained within one of the divisions of the state Department of Commerce, according to a news release.

The division is called Arkansas Workforce Connections.

Act 435, signed into law in April, codifies a community health worker's role and scope of practice, with the legislation's third subchapter also requiring reimbursement -- from the state's Medicaid program, as well as individual and group health care plans -- for services provided by those who are certified.
