FAYETTEVILLE -- Fayetteville High School notified parents via email Friday that a student had recently been diagnosed with pertussis -- commonly known as "whooping cough" -- and recommended they monitor their children for symptoms over the next few weeks.

It was the third such report from Fayetteville High School in the last month. Prior notices were made to parents Nov. 13 and 21.

Pertussis is a contagious disease involving the respiratory tract and is triggered by a bacterium called Bordetella pertussis. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends vaccination against the disease for everyone.
