STREETSBORO, Ohio — Police in Northeast Ohio are warning residents about a mobile app called "CrimeRadar," saying it may be spreading false or misleading crime alerts by misinterpreting police radio traffic.
Officers say the app recently sparked panic after reporting a firearm incident at a Streetsboro elementary school that never happened. In reality, police say the situation was a student accidentally setting off a fire alarm.
"One of the kids pulled it, being a kid," Streetsboro Officer Kyle French explained to 3News.
Soon after, the app reportedly circulated a screenshot on social media claiming there was gunfire at the school.
"I saw someone put on Facebook kind of a screenshot of the app that said there was, like, firearms discharged at the elementary school," French confirmed.
