To the Editor:
Jennifer Williams’ commentary about parents’ right to choose what books their children read and/or have access to in school libraries is one more example of the current movement to silence particular voices in the name of what is appropriate for young people to read in school. (“NY parents should have a say in what their kids read in school,” Dec. 9, 2025).
Williams fails to name the books she lobbied to have removed from the Clyde-Savannah School District. The titles include the excellent memoir, “Jesus Land,” by Julia Scheeres, which details the abuses of a religious reform school in the Dominican Republic; and “People Kill People,” Ellen Hopkins’ novel about gun violence and white supremacy. Both of these are appropriate books for high school students to read and discus
