An overnight airstrike by Myanmar’s military struck a local hospital in a rebel-controlled area, killing 34 patients and medical staff and injuring 80 others on Wednesday, according to officials and local reports.

The airstrike hit a general hospital in Mrauk-U township, an area controlled by the ethnic Arakan Army in the western state of Rakhine. The ruling military has not announced news of any attack in the area.

The military has increased airstrikes since the beginning of the civil war after a 2021 coup. The Army has set upcoming elections starting December 28, which the rebels have pledged to block in territory under their control.
