Residents on lower incomes across County Durham are set to lose their council tax exemption following fresh proposals greenlit by the local authority.
Durham County Council has voted through amendments to its discount programme during a session held on Wednesday (December 10), which will see the majority of households required to contribute a minimum of 10% towards their council tax liability.
The alterations are designed to ensure all inhabitants play a part in funding services delivered by the council.
Local authority chiefs argued the transition to a banded system has become "increasingly necessary" amid mounting financial constraints.
