Nuneaton, Bedworth and Bulkington's MPs will be asked to vote against the government plans for mandatory identification cards. That will be the request made by Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council.

But it is not something that all councillors agreed to after a motion on ID cards split the council chamber at the Town Hall. The opposing Conservatives had asked for a debate into the issue, which they say is not wanted by and will put extra burdens on local residents.

"The issue of ID is a fundamental shift in the relationship between citizen and state and I don't think anyone can deny that," said Tory group leader, Councillor Kris Wilson, during a full council meeting. "I don't think there has been any requirement for ID cards in the past 200 odd years unless it has been a time of war.
