Syracuse, N.Y. — If you’re heading to work on a day when Syracuse schools are closed for snow, you won’t have to worry about getting a ticket in a school zone.
The city’s school-zone speed cameras are only active when school is in session, according to city spokesperson Sol Muñoz. But red-light cameras run all the time.
Since the school district is closed Thursday, all violations that come in will be tossed out, Muñoz said.
The city implemented a 60-day grace period in September to encourage safer driving in school zones without immediately issuing fines.
Since Nov. 2, drivers have faced a $50 fine for each speed or red-light violation. A $25 late penalty is added to unpaid fines. The fine amounts are set by New York state, Muñoz said.
The speed limit in school zones is 10 mph below
