Andy Burnham has spoken out after claims government policies are creating more homelessness. The Greater Manchester mayor has welcomed Labour's new strategy to tackle homelessness but has called for the government to go further.
It comes as new data reveals more than 25,132 people in the north west of England , including over 11,000 children, are currently without a permanent home. One in every 61 people in Manchester are homeless , according to the figures from Shelter - the highest rate in the region.
The government has today (December 11) unveiled its National Plan to End Homelessness which promises to half the number of long-term rough sleepers over the next five years. The £3.5bn will also aim to prevent homelessness in the first place.
