Royal Oak — Holiday lights are taking on a whole new meaning at Corewell Health's William Beaumont University Hospital in Royal Oak this month.
The hospital's popular Moonbeams for Sweet Dreams returned this week, in which well-wishers beam flashlights for 10 minutes every night up at the hospital's pediatric floor to help patients and their families feel less alone during the holidays. Patients and loved ones also are encouraged to shine their own flashlights back at the crowds.
Now in its eighth year, Moonbeams will be held every night through Dec. 23.
Dozens braved the cold weather and slushy snow on Wednesday night to shine flashlights and ring bells. Many wore holiday gear and the mood was festive. Some parents put little ones on their shoulders; others snapped selfies.
