KNOTT COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT) - A cold December morning in the Chestnut Ridge higher-ground community marked a major milestone for one mother still recovering from back-to-back disasters.
Appalachia Service Project dedicated a new, mortgage-free home Thursday for Heather Dyer, a flood survivor whose family was impacted by both the 2022 flood and the flooding in February 2025. The key handoff was part of ASP’s ongoing effort to move families onto higher-ground and provide long-term, stable housing.
As dozens of volunteers, partners, and community members gathered in front of her new home, ASP President and CEO Melisa Winburn told Dyer, “Today is not about us… it’s about you, Heather.”
Dyer said navigating two floods while raising her children has made the past three and a half years especial
