The eyes of the college football world have centered on Michigan football over the last 24 hours after the Wolverines fired football coach Sherrone Moore with cause.
Per the university, an investigation found "credible evidence" he "engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member." Since his firing, Moore has been detained, arrested and booked into Washtenaw County Jail in Michigan. He is expected to be arraigned on Friday, Dec. 12.
This comes less than two weeks after the Wolverines finished the regular season with a 27-9 loss to Big Ten rival Ohio State, a loss that snapped a four-game winning streak against the Buckeyes and eliminated Michigan from College Football Playoff contention.
Moore's dismissal in Ann Arbor could also result in roster turnover for the Wolverines. Here's what to know on the transfer rules for Michigan:
Can Michigan football players transfer after Sherrone Moore's firing?
Players from Michigan's current roster are eligible to transfer out of the program when the portal opens from Jan. 2-16. This is a change from past offseasons, as the NCAA in October recommended the 15-day portal window after getting rid of the spring transfer portal window.
There's another window in which Michigan players can enter their names into the portal. The NCAA changed the 30-day window for players whose teams undergo a coaching change to 15 days. That portal will not open until five days after the new head coach is hired.
Depending on the timing of the hiring, those two windows could coincide, or Michigan could have a second 15-day period, apart from Jan. 2-16, in which players can transfer out.
Can Michigan football recruits get out of commitments after Sherrone Moore's firing?
As reported by the Detroit Free Press — part of the USA TODAY Network — players who have committed to the Wolverines, but not signed, can back out of their commitment.
For members of Michigan's 2026 recruiting class who have already signed, Moore's dismissal has resulted in an automatic release by Michigan. They can reopen their recruiting and commit to another program without consequence.
