Santa Fe police arrested a man Wednesday who they have accused of robbing a south-side Santa Fe bakery at gunpoint.

Roberto Mendez-Ortega, 37, faces a count of armed robbery, according to court records. He was booked into the Santa Fe County jail.

Witnesses said Mendez-Ortega went into Panaderia del Valle on Airport Road the evening of Dec. 5 and forced employees to empty the store's cash register into a paper bag while threatening them with a handgun, police wrote in an affidavit filed against the suspect.

An employee recognized Mendez-Ortega as a "regular" at the bakery, police wrote, and she told officers he had been in the store hours earlier with another woman. Before he left the store, he asked what time the bakery closed. He then returned around closing time in different clothes,
