WILLIAMSBURG — The city of Williamsburg and William & Mary are trading land with one another in what officials say will be a win-win for both parties.

The Williamsburg City Council voted unanimously Thursday to approve an ordinance that allows the city to exchange about 24 acres of city-owned land on Strawberry Plains Road for approximately 34 acres owned by William & Mary and adjacent to Cedar Grove Cemetery.

No money will be exchanged between the city and the university, although Williamsburg has agreed to pay for surveying costs to address the difference in the acreage being swapped.

The city-owned parcels, located at 180 and 290 Strawberry Plains Road and 112 Iris St., abut the 1,200-acre College Woods, a forested expanse that is used by
