EAST GRAND FORKS — You can put your parking ticket to good use this December if you are in East Grand Forks.
Drivers who receive a seasonal or snow removal parking ticket can clear the fine with a $15 donation or by giving five nonperishable food items to the EGF Food Shelf.
Police Chief Michael Hedlund says the arrangement has been in place for at least a decade, and it has been an effective tool to remind drivers not to park on the streets during a snow emergency.
He says 2018 was their highest recorded amount of donations, with more than 1,200 pounds of food.
"So it gets that reminder out, but in a little bit friendlier manner, I guess. It's surprising, people can get very upset with the parking ticket, but it's kind of hard to complain when your fine is going to benefit people thro
