Maharashtra Public Health Minister Prakash Abitkar on Friday informed the Legislative Assembly that 14,526 children in the age group of zero to five have died in seven districts of the state over the past three years.
Abitkar’s written reply came to a question raised by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Sneha Dubey.
According to the reply, Pune , Mumbai , Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Nagpur, Amravati, Akola, and Yavatmal districts reported 14,526 child deaths between 2022-23 and 2024-25. The minister also admitted that 138 infant deaths have been recorded in Palghar district in the last six months.
As per the Sustainable Development Goals-2030 of the United Nations, the neonatal mortality rate should be brought down below 12 per 1,000 births.
