Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a meeting of the Union Cabinet on Friday, where three major decisions were approved.
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that the 2027 Census will be India’s first fully digital census.The government has approved ₹11,718.24 crore for the exercise.
Cost per person
Based on the 2011 population of 121 crore, the cost comes to about ₹97 per person.
If the estimated population is taken as 150 crore, the cost reduces to ₹78 per person.
How the digital census will work
The census will be conducted in two phases:
Phase 1 (April–September 2026): Household listing and housing census.
Phase 2 (February 2027): Population enumeration.
