New Delhi: The government gave its nod on Friday to the Bill aimed at allowing private players into the strictly regulated civil nuclear power sector, as India targets 100 GW of atomic energy capacity by 2047.
During a meeting presided over by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Union Cabinet reportedly cleared the Sustainable Harnessing and Advancement of Nuclear Energy for Transforming India (SHANTI) Bill.
In her February Budget address, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had revealed intentions to invite private sector involvement in the nuclear power domain.
Sitharaman further unveiled the Nuclear Energy Mission to drive research and development on small modular reactors (SMRs), backed by Rs 20,000 crore, with plans to commission five homegrown SMRs by 2033.
