A total of eight WPIAL boys basketball teams and six girls basketball squads have chosen to voluntarily play up in classification over the next two school years.

The PIAA realigns classifications for all sports every two years, based on the number of enrolled students currently in grades 9-11. The next PIAA realignment is in effect for the 2026-27 and 27-28 school years.

The PIAA recently released classifications for all sports teams in the state for the next two school years. Schools had until Dec. 1 to inform the PIAA if any of their teams wished to play up in classification. A review of the list shows 28 WPIAL teams will voluntarily move up in classification while six from the City League will play up.
