With District 5-6A girls basketball play opening on Friday, nothing in the landscape is a guarantee.

There are sure to be moments of pure success, heart-wrenching tragedy and everything in between. While everyone’s record is at 0-0, some potential MVP candidates will emerge as the season wears on.

But while those trajectories can be followed along the way, there are a few standouts that enter the district portion of play with an air of expectation. Whether it be the reigning MVP, a freshman phenom looking to take the next step as the second sophomore MVP in as many years or a dominant force inside, this week Star Local Media takes a look through its coverage area at a few athletes who could very well be in contention for the top superlative in 5-6A.
