EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) - Fourth Ward City Council member Tanisha Carothers has resigned.

That’s according to Councilman Ben Trockman, who confirmed the announcement Friday afternoon.

Back in February, Carothers was arrested and charged with fraud and defacing, falsifying, or destroying election documents.

Police say she lived outside the city limits, and therefore couldn’t meet the requirements to be elected.

They say Carothers lied on her paperwork, claiming she lived in the city.

Police say when they questioned her about it, she told them she had two leases at the same time because she forgot one automatically renewed.

According to state law, a council candidate must live in the city limits for a year and their ward for six month before the election.
