Former members of the Windsor/Essex County Humane Society asked a Superior Court judge Thursday to reinstate voting privileges they say were unfairly taken away – while the society asked for the application to be dismissed.

At the heart of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice civil suit is whether the Humane Society acted in “bad faith” by refusing to approve members who registered between June 11 and Oct. 4, 2024, denying them an opportunity to vote at a special general meeting on whether to adopt a self-governing model.

At the meeting on Oct. 7, 2024, the board voted 17-10 in favour of amending its bylaws to replace the open governance model – where any member could vote at the organization’s meetings – with a closed model, where only the board’s directors would hold voting privileges
