KALAMAZOO, MI — A man was found dead in the cold in a Kalamazoo park. His family and others are looking for answers.

Christopher Nurrie Sr. spoke with his stepson for the last time Tuesday, Dec. 9, afternoon by phone.

Christopher Nurrie Jr., 29, had been at the hospital for five days after a surgery for a neck infection. He was discharged Tuesday afternoon, Nurrie said.

Nurrie Jr. was found unresponsive in the snow at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Park on the 500 block of North Rose Street and pronounced dead later that day.

“He was supposed to call me whenever he got to where he was going,” Nurrie said. “But I didn’t hear anything.”

He was homeless, his stepfather said, though he thought he was headed to sleep on someone’s couch like he often would. He did not have a phone.
