FORT DRUM, New York (WWNY) - A unit reactivated at Fort Drum as the U.S. was at war in Iraq and Afghanistan is now deactivated.
The ceremony happened on post on Friday. The 6th Squadron, 6th Cavalry Regiment, constituted in 1917, is known as the “Six Shooters.”
It was reactivated in 2005 as an air cavalry squadron equipped with OH-58D Kiowa helicopters, but moved over to Apaches years later.
The deactivation doesn’t take away any soldiers from Fort Drum, according to post officials.
This move is part of a bigger picture where the U.S. Army is modernizing units and capabilities as emerging technology is streamlined for soldiers to use, like unmanned drones and artificial intelligence, or AI.
