The identification of a man police believe is responsible for three homicides in Toronto in the 1980s and 90s is about more than just breakthroughs in DNA technology, says a professor of criminology at the University of Windsor.

Natalie Delia, an associate professor and the acting head of the university’s interdisciplinary and critical studies department, says it's an affirmation that "the lives lost mattered."

"This isn't just about, we have new DNA technological breakthroughs ... This is about, we've been holding on to our collective public memory this whole time," she said.

"And the second that we have the capacity to answer long unanswered questions, our police services, our law enforcement comes back to it and devotes the resources to be able to find justice for victims."
