A family in Washington state got some good news while checking on a flooded chicken coop in their back yard, most of the chickens survived.

Days of torrential rain in Washington state caused historic floods, stranding families on rooftops and washing over bridges.

Joyclyn Ahlm evacuated with her daughter Angela Hansen from their home in Burlington, Washington, north of Seattle, but they had no idea the water would get so high to threaten their nine chickens. Eight survived.

Ahlm lost everything where she lives on the bottom floor, so she was thankful for the chickens surviving.

"That means everything. I mean, you know, stuff is just stuff. Life is something else," she said.

National Guard troops went door-to-door early Friday to evacuate A Burlington Police Department spokesperson says the evacuation order was lifted for parts of the city by late morning. Washington is under a state of emergency, with Gov. Bob Ferguson warning that as many as 100,000 people would need to evacuate statewide.

The floods have closed roads and caused landslides. Authorities have rescued people from cars and homes. Another storm system is expected to bring more rain starting Sunday.
