The Fairfield Fire Department is mourning the loss of firefighter Michael Canil.

Canil died Sunday, Dec. 7. He was just 35. He is survived by his wife, Katie, and their two young children. His cause of death was not disclosed.

Canil joined the Fairfield Fire Department in 2021 after moving to Bethel in 2020, according to his obituary. Before that, he worked as an EMT and firefighter with the Vista Volunteer Fire Department in South Salem, New York.

“This is an incredibly difficult time for his family, loved ones, and our entire department,” Acting Fairfield Fire Chief Kyran Dunn said in a statement.

“Our focus right now is on supporting our members and ensuring that the family receives the care, privacy, and compassion they deserve,” Dunn said. “We ask for the public’s understanding and respect as our department grieves this loss.”

Community support has followed quickly. A GoFundMe campaign for Canil’s family has raised nearly $15,000 toward its $24,000 goal. The funds will help cover childcare, counseling, education, and household needs.

The community he served will remember him for his bravery and sacrifice, but his loved ones say they will remember him most for his sense of humor, generosity, and tenacity, according to his obituary.

Michael lived with an unmistakable sense of passion and adventure. He trained in martial arts, which grounded him, challenged him, and gave him a place to continually grow in discipline and strength. He found peace in fishing — it was a pastime that brought him calm, focus, and joy. Michael also loved to travel, embracing every chance to explore new places, try new experiences, and create memories with the people he loved most.

Canil was born in Stamford and graduated from Westhill High School. He later taught martial arts in South Salem and joined the Vista Fire Department in 2014, serving as a foreman from 2016 to 2020.

Calling hours are scheduled from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 16, at Green Funeral Home in Danbury.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary Church, 26 Dodgingtown Road, in Bethel.
