The Wineries of Old Mission Peninsula are demanding that Peninsula Township pay a $50 million settlement by next September, following a federal judge’s order this summer.

In 2020, 11 wineries filed a federal lawsuit against Peninsula Township after a zoning violation was issued by the township. A judge ordered the township to pay $50 million in damages, but the township has filed an appeal, seeking either a reduction in the amount owed or a dismissal of the case.

Chris Baldyga, a representative of the wineries, expressed frustration with the township’s lack of response to settlement proposals, stating, “We waited three months for any kind of content settlement proposal offers back so that we wouldn’t potentially have to make the $50 million judgment against them.”
