CHANDLER, Ariz. — Chandler's City Council unanimously voted down a controversial $2 billion artificial intelligence data center proposal Thursday night, but questions remain about whether the Trump Administration could override the local decision.

The data center's opponents packed the council meeting, with public comments running 25 to 1 against the project.

"We need more housing, not a data center that will take money and electricity," one speaker told the council.

A New York developer had sought approval for the massive AI data center at the southwest corner of Price and Dobson Roads.

The facility would have housed chips that power artificial intelligence. The building’s footprint would have been the size of seven football fields.
