Led by students at Hillsboro High School, hundreds of young people across the city walked out of their classes Friday morning. They marched first to Shute Park and then to the Hillsboro Civic Center in protest of ICE activity in their communities.

Hillsboro School District estimated close to 1,600 students participated from across Hillsboro, Century, Glencoe and Liberty high schools, as well as South Meadows, Poynter and R.A. Brown middle schools.

“We never expected this many people,” said Diego, a Hillsboro High School junior who helped organize the protest.

Students left Hillsboro High shortly after 10:30 a.m. and arrived at the park just before noon.
