SUMAS, Wash. — On Friday, much of Sumas still looked more like a lake than a city.
Floodwaters continue to cover streets, yards and farmland after the Nooksack River overflowed, pushing water deep into this small Whatcom County community. Even as some water begins to move through the drainage system, many roads remain impassable, and some residents are still unable to return home.
“We had to wade our way down to the pharmacy,” one resident said, describing daily life amid the flooding.
For those who lived through the devastating floods of 2021, the scene feels painfully familiar.
“It was scary,” said Debbie Huskey, who lives in Sumas. “It was like 2021 with the height of the water.”
Huskey said she hoped that flood would be the last of its kind. Instead, she’s watching history repeat
