WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - A Wichita man who stole and significantly damaged a priceless artifact from Central Riverside Park in early April faces more than four years in prison and owes $320,500 in restitution to the City of Wichita.
On Friday, a Sedgwick County District Court sentenced Gordon L. Pierce III to 53 months in prison in addition to the fine.
Pierce told police he committed the crime to pay off a drug debt after he was robbed of $20,000 worth of methamphetamine, a court document explained.
The affidavit laying out the case against Pierce said that he told police that he was looking for copper statues to steal after his drug dealer issued a threat to him and his family for losing a pound of meth that he was supposed to sell.
