VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Someone going out for a simple slice of pizza or a bite to eat will be taxed more on that bill here in Virginia Beach than in Times Square or Downtown San Francisco.

Virginia Beach leadership approved raising the meal tax back in July , giving Virginia Beach the second-highest combined meal and sales tax among large cities in America. Minneapolis is the only large city in the country with a higher combination.

But restaurants in Virginia Beach are now sounding the alarm that it is hurting business.

13News Now spoke to Debbie Lou Hague, who’s the president of the Virginia Beach Restaurant Association as well as manager of Ocean Eddie's Seafood Restaurant, about what they call a serious problem.
