MONROVIA, Ind. — A high school basketball referee collapsed and died at a girls basketball game in Monrovia Friday night.
Monrovia High School athletic director Jon Regashus told 13News the referee collapsed during play with about six minutes left in the second quarter of the game against Speedway. Regashus said a defibrillator was used on the official within a minute and EMTs responded moments later, but the official was not able to be resuscitated and died at the scene.
"I can't say enough good things about the people who helped," Regashus said.
Fans were evacuated from the gym during the emergency, until the game was declared suspended. The boys game for after the girls game was postponed, as was Saturday's girls basketball game at Tri-West.
