Mansfield scored two touchdowns in less than two minutes to take a 16-point lead into halftime Saturday, then the Tigers held off a late push from Fordyce to win the Class 3A state championship football game 40-30 at War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock.
The Tigers secured their first state title in school history.
Andrew Burton, who earned game MVP honors, kicked off the scoring with a 90-yard touchdown run. Jeremiah Burton ran in the two-point conversion to give the Tigers an 8-0 lead with 3:31 to play in the second quarter. After a quick three-and-out by Fordyce, Mansfield scored in two plays as Jubal Parks threw a 48-yard touchdown pass, his only completed pass of the game, to Joe Carter.
