JOHNSON COUNTY, Ill. (WSIL) -- UPDATE: 4:17 p.m. -- Authorities have taken a suspect into custody following a pursuit.

The Johnson County Sheriff's Office said a chase began after the suspect committed a traffic infraction in Pulaski County, leading deputies to pursue him into Johnson County. The suspect crashed his vehicle in the Gore Canyon area and fled on foot.

He was spotted heading into the woods north off Tunnel Hill Road, approximately one-quarter mile east of State Route 37, around 2:20 p.m.

During the pursuit, the sheriff's office said the suspect attempted to enter Sheriff Sopczak’s personal vehicle on East Side Street in Goreville. The sheriff was reported to have been hiding inside and armed, leading to the suspect's surprise and eventual surrender.
