Two Iowa National Guard soldiers were killed in an attack in Syria on Saturday morning.

On Saturday afternoon, Gov. Kim Reynolds held a news conference at the Iowa National Guard headquarters.

"Our hearts are heavy today, and our prayers and deepest condolences are with the families and the loved ones of these soldiers," Reynolds said during the news conference.

Following the announcement, Iowa leaders sent statements offering prayers for those killed and their loved ones.

Sen. Chuck Grassley said he and his wife were "heartbroken" to learn what happened.
