The season’s first measurable snowfall was impacting life on Long Island Sunday morning.

A winter weather advisory is in effect for the region until 1 p.m. Sunday. Before it is done, the National Weather Service predicted the storm will drop 3-5 inches of snow across the New York City metro and the coast, with as much as 4-6 inches possible for Eastern Long Island. Locally higher amounts are possible, forecasters said.

The snow began across Long Island at about 10 p.m. Saturday, continued overnight and was still falling as dawn broke across Long Island Sunday.

The snow is the result of a quick-moving low-pressure system crossing the region and is expected to pass generally from west to east by late Sunday morning, forecasters said.
