
1854: Cricket batsman Billy Murdoch was born in Sandhurst, Victoria. Murdoch entered the First-Class League in 1875, when he was considered Australia's finest wicketkeeper and a highly regarded right-handed batsman. During his tenure as captain of the Australian national team, in 1882, the Ashes Cup was achieved. In 2019, Murdoch was inducted into the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame.
1869: Lithgow Zig Zag Railway opened. The railway ran between Lithgow and Clarence, with the Main Western Line climbing the west side of the Blue Mountains for a vertical distance of 550 feet (170 meters). It later closed in October 1910. The railway was re-opened in October 1975 by the not-for-profit Zig zag Railway Co-operative and was a free, volunteer-run heritage railway.
1909: On 18 October 1909, New South Wales agreed to transfer 2400 square kilometers of land to the Federation for the establishment of the Federal Capital Territory. The agreement was signed by Australian Prime Minister Alfred Deakin and New South Wales Premier Charles Wade. The land was officially transferred from New South Wales in January 1911.
1919: Adrian Knox was appointed Australia's second Chief Justice. While serving as chief justice, Knox heard a number of major cases, the most famous decision of his tenure being the 1920 Engineers case. In 1920 he was appointed Lord Privy Councilor, using the title "The Right Honorable". In 1921 he was promoted to Knight Commander (KCMG).
2022: NSW vowed to raise Warragamba Dam wall height. NSW Premier Dominic Perrott had pledged to shoulder the cost of building the Warragamba Dam himself, allocating a portion from the state budget, if the federal government refuses to share the cost of the controversial scheme . But proposals to raise the dam wall had been widely criticized by environmentalists and traditional owners.
