1880:Australia's first Salvation Army meeting was held in the back of a greengrocer's truck in the Adelaide Botanic Gardens. The conference was initiated by Edward Saunders and John Gore, two men with no theological training but who shared a concern for the physical and spiritual condition of their fellow men.


1985:John Howard replaced Andrew Peacock as leader of the federal Liberal Party and became leader of the federal opposition. He later served as Australia's 25th Prime Minister from 1996 to 2007. On 26 January 2008, John Howard was awarded the Companion of the Order of Australia (AC) for distinguished service to the Australian Parliament, particularly during his tenure as Prime Minister.


1994:Australian politician John Newman was shot twice in the driveway of his home at about 9:30 pm on September 5, 1994 and died at the scene. Newman was later given a state funeral. It was Australia's first political murder. At a third trial, held from March 7 to June 29, 2001, Ngo was found guilty of Newman's murder and sentenced to life in prison.


2022:A fire truck collided with a Sydney CBD light rail tram, with four firefighters on board the truck responding to the emergency. Paramedics assessed several light rail passengers at the scene near Grand Central Station, and two passengers were taken to hospital. The incident has had a collateral impact on traffic, with parts of Pitt Street closed to traffic and L2 and L3 light rail services between Central Street and Circular Quay suspended.


2023:Victoria's rail union has threatened a strike to protest pay talks. Commuters in Melbourne could face significant disruption to the city's train network during the busy month of September because of the strike action. Strikes could last up to 48 hours and could coincide with school holidays, the AFL Grand Final and the Royal Melbourne Show. Victoria's premier called for talks to continue in good faith and said Melbourne was "where all the action is" in September.
