John Goodman made a striking appearance at the Los Angeles premiere of the new "Smurfs" movie, showcasing his impressive 200-pound weight loss. The 73-year-old actor, who voices Papa Smurf in the animated film, walked the red carpet on July 13, dressed in a navy blue suit, white shirt, and patterned tie, turning heads as he smiled for photographers.
Goodman's transformation comes after years of dedication to fitness and health. He has been open about his journey, which began in 2007, when he decided to adopt a more active lifestyle. In a 2023 interview with Rolling Stone, he shared, "I just got tired, sick and tired of looking at myself. You’re shaving in the mirror, and you don’t want to look at yourself. It gets dangerous."
The actor, who once weighed nearly 400 pounds, has credited his weight loss to a combination of portion control, quitting alcohol, and regular exercise. He explained, "I was just shoving everything into my mouth," and emphasized the importance of moderation in his diet. Goodman has also incorporated boxing into his fitness routine, stating, "I dug it. Yeah. Nobody’s going to get hurt, but it’s just hitting the mitts and trying to learn."
Goodman’s commitment to fitness has not only helped him lose weight but has also increased his energy levels. He remarked, "I’m getting to the age where I can’t afford to sit still anymore. And it gives me the energy to work, ‘cause work is very draining."
Despite his success, Goodman remains cautious about discussing his weight loss too openly. He humorously noted, "I don’t want to be an example to anybody when the weight comes thundering back on — when I start eating Crisco out of the can with a spoon and a side of confectioner’s sugar."
His recent appearance at the "Smurfs" premiere comes just months after he sustained a hip injury while filming in the U.K. for an upcoming project directed by Oscar winner Alejandro González Iñárritu. Despite the setback, Goodman is eager to continue his work in the entertainment industry.
Goodman’s career spans decades, beginning with his role in the iconic sitcom "Roseanne." He has lent his voice to beloved characters in films like "Monsters, Inc.," "Cars," and "Bee Movie." His recent projects include roles in "The Conners" and "The Righteous Gemstones."
As he prepares for the release of "Smurfs" on July 18, Goodman’s remarkable weight loss journey serves as an inspiration to many, showcasing the power of determination and lifestyle changes.
