On a warm Friday, many Edmontonians flocked to the Taste of Edmonton festival, making it a bustling day for food lovers. Instead of indulging in spicy curries or Jamaican dishes, attendees sought out refreshing options to help beat the heat.
One popular choice was the Chilled Sesame Noodle from The Lingnan, located at Booth 8 for three tickets. The dish features cold, chewy noodles that are creamy and slightly spicy, garnished with sesame seeds and slivers of carrots. While it may appear gooey, it is not, although some diners noted it could benefit from a touch of acidity.
Another highlight was the Som Tum, or Papaya Salad with Prawns, from Boualouang Laos & Thai Cuisine at Booth 45 for four tickets. This traditional Thai dish offers a delightful crunch from shredded papaya, complemented by a hint of chili heat. The addition of extra tomatoes and peanuts enhances the flavor, which is further enriched by a mix of garlic and fish sauce, along with succulent prawns.
For dessert, the Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte, or Black Forest Cake, from Continental Treat at Booth 43 for four tickets provided a sweet finish. Although it resembled a cupcake more than a traditional cake, it was a satisfying treat. The dense cake is topped with a chocolate-covered cherry and whipped cream, delivering a delightful sugar rush that was perfect for the warm day. While a glass of Kirschwasser would have been an ideal pairing, festival-goers could opt for a spiced rum from the bar tent instead.
