An additional $200 million in now available for zero-emission public school buses as fleets transition to zero-emission vehicles, as required by the state's 2019 Climate Act, Gov. Kathy Hochul's office announced Thursday.
The funding comes through the second installment of the state’s $4.2 billion Environmental Bond Act, which voters approved in 2022. The first round of funding was dispersed in September 2023.
The governor’s office said the funding will support the purchase of electric buses, charging infrastructure and fleet electrification planning as public schools transition to zero-emission technologies.
School districts will be prohibited from purchasing additional buses that burn diesel starting in 2027 and all school buses on the road must be zero-emission by 2035, per state la
