PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Since 2022, truck toll gantries across Rhode Island have remained dormant. But after a federal court decision and with the state budget finalized, Governor Dan McKee said his administration is working on a plan to turn the toll cameras back on.
"We'll come out with an announcement when the computers and actual technology are in place to put the tolls in place, which is several months away," he said on Wednesday.
The state originally approved truck tolls in 2016, with the fees going toward rebuilding bridges across the state. But the gantries were turned off after a judge ruled the tolls discriminated against tractor-trailer trucks.
