A cyclist was killed Thursday afternoon after being hit by an 18-wheeler on St. Claude Avenue, according to the New Orleans Police Department.

Emergency medical services pronounced the man dead at the scene near the intersection of St. Claude and Franklin avenues. The crash was reported at around 4:35 p.m.

NOPD said traffic fatality investigators are working to determine the circumstances of the collision and urged drivers to avoid the area.

Several blocks along St. Claude Avenue are closed to vehicle traffic while the investigation continues, including intersections at Port, Ferdinand, Marigny, Music and Marais streets.

Police did not immediately release more information.
