A cyclist was killed Thursday afternoon after being hit by an 18-wheeler on St. Claude Avenue, according to the New Orleans Police Department.

Emergency medical services pronounced the 65-year-old man dead at the scene near the intersection of St. Claude and Franklin avenues, police said. The crash was reported at around 4:35 p.m.

NOPD public information officer Karen Boudrie confirmed the 18-wheeler was traveling westbound on St. Claude and making a right turn on Franklin Avenue when the man was killed. The driver called 911, remained on the scene and spoke to authorities, Boudrie said.
