CHICAGO — A child is recovering in the hospital after he was struck by gunfire while riding in a car on Friday night.

According to Chicago police, the shooting unfolded around 9:35 p.m., though the specific location where it occurred is unclear.

A preliminary investigation indicates that the victim, a 6-year-old boy, was riding in a car in an unknown area when an offender heading westbound in an SUV pulled out a gun and opened fire in the direction of the victims.

Amid the gunfire, the chguld suffered a gunshot wound to his right buttocks, police said.

Following the shooting, officers say the driver of the vehicle took the child to a hospital in Oak Lawn, where he was admitted in Good condition.

Currently, it is unclear what led to the gunfire.
