WEST VIRGINIA (WVNS) - If you see an urgent medical situation in progress, your first instinct might be to jump in to help.
First responders have said, taking the proper steps is vital to ensuring the safety not only of the people involved, but also yourself.
Paul Seamann of Jan-Care Ambulance said contacting 9-11 is one of the first and most important steps. From there, dispatchers can walk you through how to proceed. First step: make sure you're safe. Second step: call 9-11. That gets EMS en route," he said. "If you want to engage in helping, then they can give you step-by-step.
