Spirit Airlines is once again reducing its pilot headcount as it adjusts to market changes. The ultra-low-cost carrier will be furloughing hundreds of pilots and downgrading the positions of over 100 more. These changes come as the airline shrinks its flight schedule in response to weakened demand for its product , especially as customers flock to full-service airlines.

Spirit has faced some very turbulent skies recently. The post-COVID world has seen airline labor costs spike, posing an especially large threat to ultra-low-cost carriers that build their business by offering rock-bottom fares. In response, Spirit pursued a failed acquisition with JetBlue , before restructuring in Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
