PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — The FBI Boston Division is warning New Englanders of a rise in law enforcement and government impersonation scams.

The scammers typically target their victims through unsolicited telephone calls, claiming to be representatives of well-known law enforcement or government agencies. Their goal is to "extort money or steal personally identifiable information" from their victims, according to FBI Boston.

"Be advised, law enforcement and federal agencies do not call individuals threatening arrest or demanding money," FBI Boston explained.

FBI Boston said scammers tend to spoof caller ID information in an effort to make it appear as if the call is coming from an agency's legitimate phone number.
